Chapter fifteen
Turns out, the freaking nihilists had broken into my house. My security system let the cops know and sent me a notification, but it came through to my email inbox, and my phone isnât set up to notify me for that. Anyway, the cops went by, but they had already cleared out, though they had smashed a bunch of stuff and drunk all my alcohol. It wasnât conclusively the nihilists who did it, but we were all treating it as though it was them, so I was prohibited from going home until they were found.
Also in my inbox was an email from Sophia. It read:
Sounds like youâve had an eventful time while Iâve been away. Canât wait to hear about it. The project has pretty much wrapped up here. Not allowed to say too much about it, but I donât think we will be needing to install those solar panels on our house after all. Also, Iâm a genius, just in case you werenât aware. Canât wait to see you tomorrow.
Love you.
Sophia.
I wrote her back.
Thatâs great that the project went well, and I already knew about the genius thing. About tomorrow . . . couple of things. First, some nutjobs are trying to kill me and broke into our house, so until theyâre caught, we canât go home. Second, I wonât be able to pick you up tomorrow night as Iâm going to be at a charity event Iâm using as bait to catch another nutjob who has been murdering a bunch of people. So, yes, things have been interesting while youâve been gone. Iâll sort out a hotel room or something tonight and then let you know whatâs up tomorrow when you land. Canât wait to see you too, sorry itâs not under better circumstances.
Love you too.
John.
I sent an extra copy of my email via text in case she didnât get the email in time, and then I had to get back to work organizing a short-notice press conference. That wasnât as difficult as it sounds. I called up the reporter I knew at Republic News, her name was Anna by the way, and told her I was making an announcement, and who I was going to be making it with. With four big names behind me, she was practically falling over herself to cover it. Then it was just a matter of sending messages to the smaller news outlets around the city, and they made it fairly easy to get in touch. Basically, if you get a bunch of famous people together, itâs not that hard to get the media to cover it.
So, a few hours later, I was standing outside the Republic Museum of Art flanked by Harris Murtaugh, Eliza Johnson, Bob Reech, and Darlene Wind, giving a statement at a little podium someone had rustled up for the occasion.
âWe have all heard about this so-called âBlack Swan Killerâ who has been killing people involved in doing good in the world, and some people are understandably worried.
